Liberian Senators Divided Over Pres. Weah’s Call For Dual Citizenship Law

Liberian Senators are providing contrary opinions on calls by President George Weah to revisit laws on citizenship, property ownership, and law to make people of non-Negro decent citizens of Liberia. In an off-the-agenda discussion (informal) while the law is yet to be presented to the Legislature by the President of Liberia, lawmakers (Senators) were on Tuesday, January 30, heard in the chambers arguing particularly over that very sticky issue of dual citizenship, which the President highlighted in his State of the Nation address on Monday, January 29. Some of the lawmakers supported the idea of making “white people” citizens of Liberia, while others kicked against the idea. But those of them who were seen supporting a white person citizenship disagreed with the proposal to give white people rights to own property (land). In the President’s address, he stated that the great objective of forming these colonies was to provide a home for the dispersed and oppressed children of Africa, an

Pres. George Weah Administration Meets US$155M in Government’s Coffers

According to the Central Bank of Liberia, the current foreign reserve Weah’s administration has inherited is US$155.1 million. And with the prevailing economic situation, generating more revenue would be a daunting task that would require massive stimulus plan.  The President is not ignorant of what he has signed up to. In his maiden Annual Message at Legislature on Monday, 29 January 2018, right in the presence of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Weah said the obvious:  “…It is possible to inform you that the state of the economy that my administration has inherited leaves a lot to be desired." "This is plain for all to see, for we are all affected by it. Our economy is broken, our government is broke, our currency is in free-fall, inflation is rising, unemployment is at an unprecedented high, and our foreign reserves are at an all-time low.”  According to the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), the country, in 2017, experienced sharp increase in inflation from 8.8 percen

See All the Fashion at the State of the Union 2018

President Donald Trump's immediate family is showing their support at the State of the Union. On Tuesday evening, viewers watching the address spotted First Lady Melania Trump in the audience before the first remarks were made. For tonight's televised event, Melania opted for a Christian Dior white capri-pant suit. She completed her look with a Dolce & Gabbana silk top and Christian Louboutin stilettos. As for Ivanka Trump, she enjoyed her father's first State of the Union address next to her husband Jared Kushner and opted for an asymmetrical dress. E! News has learned the plaid dress is from Oscar de la Renta and is priced at $2,690. Aside from the President's family, viewers of tonight's political event may have also seen several democrats wearing a Time's Up pin. In fact, dozens of democratic legislators showed their solidarity against sexual harassment and assault by wearing black outfits. "The importance of #TimesUp & #MeToo is about more than

Melania Trump's all-white ensemble raises questions at the State of the Union

Not only did first lady Melania Trump garner attention when she broke with long-standing tradition by arriving to the State of the Union separately from the president on Capitol Hill on Tuesday night, but her outfit also sparked speculation across social media about whether she was quietly making a political statement. When the first lady, wearing a white two-piece suit and white shirt, took her seat ahead of the president's address, many on Twitter wondered if her choice of dress was a nod to women's rights or a sartorial tongue-in-cheek move to stoke speculation.  Traditionally, women in the suffragette movement were encouraged to wear white as a symbol of the movement. Last year, when Trump addressed his first joint session of Congress shortly after his inauguration, Democratic lawmakers like Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wore white in support of women's rights, saying it was "in spite" of a president that didn't.

Melania arrives at State of the Union without Trump

Melania Trump reportedly arrived at the Capitol building in advance of her husband President Trump Tuesday night — despite tradition of first couples traveling together to the State of the Union. Melania traveled via motorcade from the White House along with the guests she invited to sit with her in the first lady’s box, according to CNN. The first lady’s communications director told CNN Melania Trump is “honoring her guests for the true heroes they are.” “In addition to holding a White House reception and photo opportunity for them, along with their friends and family, she is accompanying them to the Capitol,” the spokesperson, Stephanie Grisham, said in a statement. The travel arrangement takes place after reports said the first lady was blindsided by a report that President Trump allegedly had a hotel room romp with a porn star who was paid hush money to keep quiet. The two have not been seen together since New Year’s Eve.

President Donald Trump gave his first State of the Union address on Tuesday. Read the President's speech as prepared for delivery and released by the White House: Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, the First Lady of the United States, and my fellow Americans: Less than 1 year has passed since I first stood at this podium, in this majestic chamber, to speak on behalf of the American People -- and to address their concerns, their hopes, and their dreams. That night, our new Administration had already taken swift action. A new tide of optimism was already sweeping across our land. Each day since, we have gone forward with a clear vision and a righteous mission -- to make America great again for all Americans. Over the last year, we have made incredible progress and achieved extraordinary success. We have faced challenges we expected, and others we could never have imagined. We have shared in the heights of victory and the pains of hardship. We endured floods and fir

Liberians React to Weah pledge to alter ‘racist’ constitution ‘Liberians are not greedy for wealth...The entire country could be bought and owned by foreigners in less than a year’

President George Weah said Monday he would seek to remove a “racist” clause in the country’s constitution that restricts citizenship to black people, and pledged to take a pay cut in a dire economy. Liberia was founded by freed slaves from the United States in 1847, who inserted the requirement into the constitution to create “a refuge and a haven for freed men of color.” Weah said in his first state of the nation address that he believed this restriction was “unnecessary, racist, and inappropriate for the place that Liberia occupies today in the comity of nations,” as well as holding back business. Calling for that provision to be removed, Weah also called for the ban on foreign ownership on property to also be struck from the constitution via referendum. “No foreign investor... will be willing to make significant direct investments in our country if they cannot own property,” he noted. Weah’s wife, Clar, has faced intense criticism for her Jamaican roots in Liberia. She was de

Facing a 'broke' country, Liberia's Weah cuts his own salary

President George Weah pledged to cut his own salary by a quarter on Monday, in a nationwide address in which he warned of tough times ahead for a "broke" country. "The state of the economy that my administration inherited leaves a lot to do and to be decided," the former international soccer star said in an address apparently aimed at lowering high expectations following his election victory at the end of last year to replace Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. "Our economy is broken; our government is broke. Our currency is in free fall; inflation is rising," Weah said. "Unemployment is at an unprecedented high and our foreign reserves are at an all-time low". Weah had promised a crackdown on endemic corruption as he was sworn in a week ago to the cheers of thousands of exuberant supporters crammed into a stadium in the capital, Monrovia.

President George Weah’s first State of the Nation - Full Speech

HONORABLE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: I would now like to address you on what I consider to be my most urgent and imperative agenda. Since the founding of this country in 1847, more than 170 years ago, there have been certain restrictions on citizenship and property ownership that – in my view – have become serious impediments to the development and progress of this country. These restrictions include the limitation of citizenship only to black people, the limitation of property ownership exclusively to citizens, and the non-allowance of dual citizenship.   Limitation of Citizenship only to Black People The framers of the 1847 constitution may have had every reason and justification to include these restrictions in that historic document. In their own words, and I quote: “The great object of forming these Colonies, being to provide a home for the dispersed and oppressed children of Africa, and to regenerate and enlighten this benighted continent, none but persons of color shall be admitted

The South African all-male choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a perennial favorite at the Grammys, on Sunday won for the fifth time with an album that revisits one of its breakthrough works. The ensemble -- which has brought a global audience to the traditional Zulu style of harmony-driven singing, known as isicathamiya -- took the Best World Music Album award for "Shaka Zulu Revisited: 30th Anniversary Collection. "Shaka Zulu" came the following year. The group decided to re-record the "Shaka Zulu" album in tribute to the group´s founder Joseph Shabalala, who has retired and handed control to his four sons.
